Obituary for Glen Murphy "Murph" Young

Glen Murphy Young, 88, of Lake Toxaway, passed away July 5th at Tore's Home in Brevard.
He was born in Tuscaloosa, AL Aug 28th, 1924, to parents Vertrees Murphy Young and Glen Jones Young.
When he graduated from Tuscaloosa High School, World War II was raging. He joined the Navy, becoming an F4F fighter pilot, based on the aircraft carrier USS Guadalcanal. When recalled to active duty during the Korean War, he was based on the USS Corregidor as Supply Officer.
After his initial military service, he attended the University of Alabama, earning his B.S. degree in Commerce and Business Administration. Having been born, raised and educated in Tuscaloosa, Murph remained a loyal supporter of the Crimson Tide.
Murph's business career was spent with Ryder Truck Rental, having begun as a District Manager and rising to President and CEO of the company, based in Miami, Fl. He was an excellent leader, loved and respected by fellow employees; he was coach, mentor and good friend, unaffected by position and power.
He enjoyed travel, salt water boating in South Florida, and peaceful fresh water cruising around Lake Toxaway. He was an avid golfer, most recently having enjoyed 25 years of play at Burlingame Country Club in Sapphire.
Murph is survived by his wife, Marty, children Bob Young (Donna) of Venice FL, Susan Young Penney of Maplewood, NJ, Collin Condon (Anna) of Harrisonburg, VA, and Karin Brown (Bucky) of Asheville; grandchildren, Caroline Penney, Janie Penney, Lawson Penney, Hana Schloz, and Peter Condon. He was predeceased by his first wife, Patsy Howard Young, and his son, Glen Howard Young.
His memorial service will be held on Wed, July 17th, at 2 PM at the First United Methodist Church, 325 N Broad St, Brevard, NC 28712. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Memory Care, 100 Far Horizons Lane, Asheville, NC 28803 or Lake Toxaway United Methodist Church (Outreach Fund), P.O. Box 83, Lake Toxaway, NC 28747.
