Obituary for Volney Ulys Nicholson

Volney Ulys Nicholson, 98, of Rosman, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, November 3rd, 2017.
He was born in the mountains of Jackson county on November 5th, 1918, to the late James Norman Nicholson and Emma Wood Nicholson, and his body was laid to rest in a nearby family cemetery on what would have been his 99th birthday.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, LouElla McCall Nicholson; five brothers, Alvin, Vernon, Herbert, Herman, Roy; and one beloved sister, Queenie Parker.
He was a veteran of the United States Armed Forces and proud of the time he spent serving his country during WW2, including his time driving for the Red Ball Express under General Patton. Following his return home, he drove trucks for Carl Lumber Company and later retired in the mid-1980’s from Ecusta after 34 years of employment. Always a hard worker and never one to sit idle, He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, talking politics, and passing down family heritage and traditions to his grandchildren during his many years of retirement.
He is survived by three sons, Douglas Nicholson and wife Billie of Pisgah Forest, Mike Nicholson and wife Cathy of West Union, and Terry Nicholson and wife Anita of Rosman; seven granddaughters, Trinthia N. Raymond and husband Dave of Jacksonville, Fla., Cynthia Nicholson of Mills River, Charlie N. O'Shields and husband Tommy of Brevard, Kendra N. Galloway and husband Chad of Seneca, Leah N. Bush and her husband Matt of Rosman, Tiffany N. Galloway and husband Benson Jr. of Rosman, and Cortney Nicholson of Rosman; ten great grandchildren, Madeline and Wesley Raymond, Quentin Nicholson & wife Bree, Alyssa O'Shields, Anthony and Caroline Galloway, Evelyn, Ezra, and Cailyn Bush, and Clayte Galloway; double first cousin Sue Nicholson; and several nieces and nephews.
Special Thanks to Mabel Byrd, Barbie Galloway, Heather (his Michigan girl), Kevin and Jackie Starcher, and longtime friend & neighbor Ed Franks for their support during the last two years.
The family received friends on Sunday November 5th, 2017 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home. Funeral services, with Military Honors, followed in the chapel at 2pm with Pastors Shaun Dodson and Benson Galloway officiating. Graveside services were held at Wood Cemetery in Jackson county.
