The Writing Spider-A Young Girl's Superstition

When I was about eight and Jackie was about six and Becky Vaughan was about nine or ten we were together in my teeny little vegetable garden, the one I tended myself, though an adult planted it for me. This was at Boyleston where all three of us lived at the time. Apparently some adult had come to see my parents, bringing Jackie and Becky. There might have been some other children who came, but I do not remember if they did.

I had managed to grow at least a few beans and some corn in my garden. It was fall; the corn stalks had withered, and a large spider had built a web spanning the space from one corn stalk to another. It was not an enormous spider, but it was the biggest one I had ever seen and it scared me. Jackie did'nt see the spider, and was about to walk right into the corn stalks where that spider was lurking, silently waiting for its unsuspecting prey.

I shouted "Jackie! There's a spider!"

Suddenly Becky let out a wail "Oh No! You said her name! You said her name! That's a writin' spider, and if it hears somebody's name, it'll write it in its web and in three days that person'll die!"

I don't know if Jackie gave it another thought, but for three days I feared for Jackie's life.

But, she made it through, and for many more years. And she made her mark in this world, and will not be forgotten.
