Words can't express how much my heart is broken losing Randy. We became friends many years ago. We went to a dance together at Northeast Junior High. One very special memory is his mother taking us bowling and making certain that we learned proper bowling etiquette. Randy had parties in his basement that were so much fun with our friends as we were growing up as teen-agers. Randy's favorite song at that time was "Put Your Head on My Shoulder." He liked to play a game called Spotlight Couples where if the person with the flashlight shined it on the couple dancing then they had to kiss each other. We were really wild! Randy loved my daddy and told me many times how lucky I was to have a Daddy like him. Randy never came to my house without a Whitman's Sampler for Daddy. When Randy went to Fort Union Military Academy, we kept in touch by writing letters to each other in which he included a picture of himself so handsome in his uniform. When Randy returned to High Point Central High from military school, we remained friends and even had some classes together. I have never heard anyone say an unkind thing about Randy. He was so friendly and kind to everyone. After graduating with Randy from High Point Central High School in 1964, we lost contact with each other. I went to Appalachian and he joined the Marines and went to Viet Nam. The next time that I saw Randy was at a High Point Christmas Parade where he was a volunteer policeman. It was then that I introduced him to my husband and two daughters. Again, we lost contact with each other. The next time that I heard from Randy was he had found my E-Mail address. At first we just exchanged E-Mails and talked several times on the telephone. Randy was living in Wyoming and Montana where he met Mary who would become his wife. Together, they bought beach property at Brays Island and later near Beauford, SC. Last summer, he contacted me regarding our graduating class, 70th Birthday Party in High Point. At that time I found out that he was living in the mountains of NC not too far from where I live. We had planned to meet for lunch at Cashiers, but we never found a chance to meet. There are many articles, poems, and on Face Book about tell people TODAY that you love them. TOMORROW, you may not have the opportunity. RIP Randolph Harrison Smith, our beloved Randy. You are loved and you will be missed.
